Takashi Nishiyama (Video Game Designer)

Profession: Video Game Designer

Biography: Takashi Nishiyama created a number of highly influential game series, including Street Fighter and The King of Fighters, which shaped the fighting game genre.

Nishiyama began his career at Irem, a video game company. There he designed "Moon Patrol" (1982), an early game that introduced a technique called parallax scrolling which made game backgrounds appear to have depth.

He then created "Kung-Fu Master" (1984), which is considered the first beat 'em up game (i.e., a game in which the player fights many opponents at once).

After Irem, Nishiyama moved to Capcom, another game company. At Capcom, he directed "Street Fighter" (1987). This game introduced special moves, like the Hadouken, which became a staple of fighting games which pit two characters against each other in one-on-one combat.

Nishiyama later joined SNK where he worked on the Neo Geo system. The Neo Geo was both an arcade system and a home console. At SNK he also created the "Fatal Fury" series and contributed to other fighting game franchises.

In 2000, however, Nishiyama founded his own company called Dimps. The company has worked on games in the Sonic the Hedgehog, Dragon Ball, and Street Fighter series.
